Makka

Considering this was Kehana's first game, the scoreline was a bit expected, and it didnt help that the first team the lads faced together was a strong one.

Marquee black man Nathan started proceedings with a lovely through ball that Makka failed to convert, showing promise for the rest of the game. However this was not the case for a mere 10 seconds later after some nice footwork Macho Men striker Kid #4 grabbed the opener. This was the sign of things to come, as Macho Men proceeded to score 7 unanswered goals.

At halftime Caretaker Miguel Pereira had some words for Makka from the sidelines, trying to get more out of his player. The stand-in Man also had some words for the Team as a whole, but it appeared to fall on deaf ears as after kick off Macho Men grabbed another 3.

Defensive lapses were being to creep in as the Kehanas were ripped apart at will. Then, a lose ball allowed Makka to take on two down the left flank, before spotting joe sprinting to the D, the low cross missing the player, but fortunately substitute Cullinan was on hand to grabbed a break-away goal for the team.

The goal sparked mass celebrations from both the players and crowd, and from the kick-off you could tell the players were hungry for another, Cheng rushing into the tackle with commitment and desire. However this was short lasted as Macho Men then grabbed 2 more, until a lose ball from a goalkeeper throw allowed Makka to sneak in behind the defense, and a cheeky toe flick into the corner around the keeper gave the player some gratitude for his work.

Ratings:

B. Cheng - 7:

Great first game for the first timer, showed good commitment and desire to play his little asian heart out. a few defensive mishaps but thats to be expected. Note to manager: never let him play goalkeeper again.

C. Cullinan - 6:

Didnt see much of the Aussie, but he did alot of work marking his player out of the game (slightly). Did well to grab his poachers goal. Note to Manager: work on his tactical game

B. Milk - 8:

Great work from Milk, held up play, let down by his fellow players when they didnt give him an option, and was forced to take it alone on more than one occasion. No great plays as such, but his work rate earned him an 8

N. Newbond - 6:

the black man was quiet, only putting in 5 or 6 good passes. Im sure he did some good off the ball work so he earns a 6

J. Blay - 8:

Solid performance from the keeper, when he came out of his goal he was confident on the ball, and had more than a few shots on goal. managed to create space for himself well. His keeping skills were a bit below par from what we expect from the glovesman but he did pull out 3 or 4 good stops.

Makka - you decide:

im not gona rate myself, whats wrong with you.

Top 10 games of 2009: Number 1

1. Assassins Creed II

For those who played the first game, you will realise how incredible this series is. Hugely plot orientated (probably one of the best i have seen in a game, ever), it also boasts incredible gameplay, beautiful graphics and amazing AI.

The first game was amazing, although admitedly slightly repeatitive, it still shone with its uniqueness brought with its free-running (at the time, now every game has it), assassin style play (you have a hidden blade concealed on your wrist that you stealth assassinate people with), brilliant sword play, great exploration value and good mechanics.

The second game builds on this, now there are loads of different missions, each assassination is unique, weapons have been added, new stealth assassination techniques added, and the plot line is now 10x more messed up.

I dont think I can describe this game any other way accept that you have to play it to understand how good it is. Worth 11/10.

2. Left 4 Dead 2

Possibly the greatest post-apocolyptic shoot-up series ever (eat your heart out Resident Evil) returned with the sequel to the award winning Left 4 Dead.

Not happy with the original L4D, Valve proceeded to take it and run with it faster than Conrad when he threw Miguels shoe over the fence. To the critically acclaimed formula, they added melee weapons and new breeds of infected. Gameplay was tightened and Graphics updated. A new story arc was also added to tie together all 5 campaigns in the 2 games.

For those who live under rocks, the core concept of L4D is co-op shoot-the-crap-out-of-everything. Your team consists of yourself and 3 other players (CPU's, human players or a mixture of both). The game uses an engine known as the "director", which follows the way you play the game (be aware that you can do this game any multiple of ways, kill things in different ways, etc.) and then adjusts the scenario accordingly, creating a dynamic, replayable and enjoying gaming experience.

Gameplay involves very tactical FPS style fighting, guns and melee weapons can be used to take down the enemy hordes. The story and settings used create a very immersive and fuck-your-shit-up style which will engross the player instantaneously. Graphics plays a large part because of this, and unless you have a high end or gaming computer, you won't be able to enjoy this game to its fullest.

To put it bluntly, if you have not played this game, you have not lived.

3. Borderlands

Touted as the new Left 4 Dead, this game lives up to its expectations, take the 4 player co-op shoot-everything-that-moves style and taking it to new places on next gen consoles.

The games graphics and gameplay should be commended, combining RPG elements with FPS gaming to create a sort of, Final Fantasy Call Of Duty. The game has a huge amount of customisation, weapon slots, grenades, its all there.

The gameplay is amazing, managing to make an FPS RPG is hard enough, let alone make it in a way that the screen doesn't look like coca cola got to it first. it runs smoothly and isn't stop/start gaming. almost mission based, you gain experience, money, items etc killing stuff, which you spend on your characters to evolve, basic RPG stuff. FS comes into play when your killing stuff, free aim, triggers, grenades, the lot.

graphicly its very much an RPG world, fantasy creatures, messed up locations. etc.

Portal 2

After seeing the concept art on wongys blog, i dug around a little bit and found a fair bit about our favourtie science facility.

Portal 2 takes place hundreds of years after the first game. Despite her apparent destruction at the end of Portal, GLaDOS remains functional. The player controls Chell, the same protagonist from Portal; retroactively patched, the ending for the first game shows Chell being dragged away by an unseen figure with a robotic voice, where she has been placed in stasis over the years.[3] The game will take place in the Aperture Science Labs, untouched by human hands but overrun by decay and nature.[3] The player will interact with many of the numerous personality cores (which were seen activating in the post-credits scene from Portal), which have become active in the intervening years, using the automated systems of Aperture Science to create their own microcosms within the facility.[3] The cores themselves are unable to move save through overhead rail systems. Chell is awoken by one of these, Wheatley, who has become concerned for the state of decay and seeks to correct it. Wheatley acts as the player's guide during the tutorial and initial stages. Soon, the two are introduced to GLaDOS, who is quick to accuse Chell of murdering her years ago.[3]

Two new characters will be introduced for the two player cooperative mode, which will have its own unique plot and setting.[4] These two yet-to-be-named characters include a modified turret gun and a personality core; both units are bipedal and equipped with their own portal guns.[3] Though once part of the networked facility, they have become separate entities, and are treated to similar abuse by GLaDOS as Chell is, being put through a series of complicated test chambers.[3]

yes, its from wikipedia. shut up.

4. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Probably one of, if not the, best game in the COD series. The most popular FPS series retured in 2009 with MW2, follow-up to the acclaimed original Modern Warfare. After the widely canned World At War (apart from epic nazi zombies) this game was a fresh breath of air in the stifled world of FPS.

As is the case with COD, each game brings a new slice of epicness, and as ive said with alot of these games, they meet the expectations. MW2 is... brilliance on a stick.

FPS is all about gameplay, graphics and multiplayer. In all three areas MW2 ticks all the boxes and then does the extra credit question at the bottom that got half cut off by the photocopier.

the gameplay in MW2 is breathtaking. run around and shoot some terrorists (or americans/britains, if thats what you'd prefer), pull out your C4, blow up some more terrorists/americans/britains, pull out your comlink and summon a MOTHERFUCKING AC130. not only is this awesome, the way MW2 lets you do it is amazing. The aiming system is brilliant, shooting its brilliant, moving is brilliant, stand still is brilliant. its just awesome.

graphics - if any critisism is to be laid at COD, its graphics. but MW2 is a new stepping stone towards an area not usually traversed by FPS. explosions look like explosions, your actually blinded by flash grenades, physically stunned by stun grenades. the way the game is designed you actually feel it.

a major, major component of MW2 is its online ability. playing like an RPG, run around, killing noobs and completing challenges to unlock new weapons, accesories (such as laser dot aiming for weapons, fmj rounds, ACOG scopes, the list is endless) camos and perks. massive, massive replayability, the only reason this game isnt number two (it still doesnt beat my number one), is because online play has been slightly ruined by noobs.

5. Killzone 2

procliamed as "the greatest FPS ever made", this game has alot to live up to.

and holy shit does it.

Your standard FPS will have a few levels, some nice weaponry, shiny camo guys and fucked up plotlines involving terrorists or russians.

Killzone 2 takes this formula and injects a spoonful of awesome into the mix. Set on a crazy alien homeworld with acid rain and controlable thunderstorms, your pretty much shitting yourself during the intro.

FPS games make their name on how good their combat system is. Killzone prides itself on have one of, if not the, best combat system ever. The shooting is sharp and crisp, everything is at your disposal and allocated to buttons that actually make sense, the aiming isn't heavily retarded and your allies perform like 10th prestige COD players.

Something not common to FPS is graphics, but then i guess most FPS's arn't located on messed up alien homeworlds. Nevertheless, it's truely a sight to behold. Taking advantage of the powers of the mighty PS3, you can blow up aliens in glorious high definition.

the levels are wonderfully crafted to give both suspense, action and horror in equal measures.

6. Kingdom hearts 358/2 Days

What else can i say about the highest selling franchise in Japan?

Kingdom Hearts is like a comedians Final Fantasy, with cool graphics, awesome gameplay and humor. The latest installment is as good if not better than its main console counterparts, the drawbacks of the DS graphics almost unnoticeable (its been touted as the best game graphically on a DS).

The plot is an "interquel" (never heard it before), but i know the game is based upon events which happened after the first game (KH) and before the second (KH2), so im guessing thats what interquel means. In any case its as rich as the two main games, including an epic battle near the beginning of Lord of the Rings proportions, and its bound to leave you at the end either tearing your hair out or crying in anger, as its almost become a cliche for KH games to end on epic cliffhangers.

the gameplay itself is also being hailed, much more suited towards the main games, with alot easier access of magic and special attacks. If this was on a main console (PS3, Wii, 360) then it wouldn't be on this list at all, but because it has pushed the DS to its absolute limits and produced something of this quality, i can't help but fit it in here somehow. brilliance.

7. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

building on the sucess of the first Uncharted game, Sony has taken everything that was great about the series and improved it drastically, making for one awesome game.

The series is heavily plot driven, and Among Thieves doesn't dissapoint, with tonnes of action and cliffhangers to keep even the biggest of movie buffs impressed.

the gameplay is even more solid than the first Uncharted, the 3rd person action/adventure still working brilliantly. The duck and cover system used in the first game returns, and it's still as invaluable as ever when your fighting an army of thugs.

Graphicallly it's what you've come to expect from Uncharted, the environments are breath-taking. If anyone doubts the PS3's power, buy this game. No wonder its a PS3 exclusive.

8. Ratchet & Clank: A Crank in Time

yet another brilliant platforming game from insomniac and the now iconic R&C series.

continuing with the future aspect (time travel, etc) we see more of a clank plot-driven game, after his capture at the end of the last game.

gameplay wise, although its the same sort of thing you got in the last 6 games, its still as fresh and brilliant as the first time you got to use the RYNO.

Half of what makes R&C fun is the messed up weaponry you get to hurt stuff with, and new weapons include The Rift Inducer 5000, the big daddy of the Rift Inducer from Up Your Arsenal (think a black hole opening over your enemies with tentacles coming out); The Spiral of Death, which fires a spiral at the enemy, causing... death; and the RYNO V, the motherfucker of all RYNO's, its now twice as large, about 4 times more rapid, about twice as destructive (it kills the second final boss in one shot), and it plays classical music as you shoot it. Also of note is the Chimp-O-Matic, much in the same vein as the Quack-O-Ray of old, which if you didn't guess turned enemys into ducks.

Reoccuring items of fun include the Grooveitron (if you know what it is you know how awesome it is, google it if you dont), and Mr. Zurkon, the personal floating bodyguard of death.

graphics in the game have improved (its hard these days for a game in a seires to go backwards in this area, but it has happened), its alot shinier than previous installments and the worlds you visit take advantage of the PS3 with huge amounts of roaming and great backgrounds.

the other half of R&C fun is the plot. Those who have played this series before know what i mean. Plumber makes his return, along with lots of older inside gags such as Rusty Pete and Dr. Nefarious. Sadly Qwarks crayon-drawn plans do not make an appearance, but the man himself does have a few scenes, including being mauled by a giant dog-type thing, which he names Bubbles.

Overall its another fantastic Ratchet and Clank edition, and we're seeing with each installment that its getting better and better. Hopefully Insomniac makes another series, as this game was the last in the Future Trilogy.

9. Tom Clancy's EndWar

Tom Clancys first foray into RTS paid dividends with this gem, taking the original RTS formula and turning it into a war itself.

Voice recognition is used by players to command their army of up to 8 units (1 unit could be a helicopter, or a battalion of troops for example) against computer or human commanders on real time maps. the look and feel of the game makes you feel like you really are in command, giving orders and watching them do your bidding with conviction.

It would be all well and good if the game had awful mechanics, but it doesnt. The units actually have common sense, taking cover and not running madly into danger. they also listen to commands dilligently, not running into walls when you tell them to go behind something. the voice recognition works brilliantly, understanding pretty much every accent, even ones you put on yourself. There are some RTS games, realistic ones in particular, that have that weird confrontation where a solider brings down a tank with his rifle, and thankfully Clancy seems to have rectified this now staple attribute in games these days.

as is often the case with war games the online mode is what makes the game what it is, and this game doesn't dissapoint. You feel like your actually pitting yourself against an enemy commander in a dark room in a lean back swivel chair with giant screens everywhere.

Its like Command and Conquer on steroids.

10. PES 2010

i dont care if its a football game, considering how awful PES 2009 was, and FIFA's rumblings over the past 3 years, this is a VAST improvement, and easily the best sports game of the year.

Master League has taken a massive overhaul, now including youth teams, imporved transfer system and better league structuring. Champions League returns, and now Europa League makes its debut. Ligue 1, Serie A and Eredivisie are fully licensed, with most La Liga teams licensed, and Manchester United and Liverpool are also included.

In the gameplay department, the AI now understands the concept of running into space, jockeying and why i want to press super cancel. The TeamVision system implemented last year was recived by weeping, but now you actually see it working infront of you. The Tactic Slides are also incredably useful, you can turn them on and off to suit your particular playing style, and fine tune your team to perfection.

Graphically FIFA still has nothing on PES, so what if they look cooler turning around, at least in PES Rooney looks like Rooney, and not Shrek.

My favourite addition has to be the boots. With over 40 starting boots, and about the same again added through downloaded content, you can fine tune individual players to give them that edge over everyone else. You can give Fabregas his CTR360's, or even give them to your become a legend player. Each boot has its own individual strengths and weaknesses, including shot power, acceleration and swerve.

and while i'm at it:

Jewish/israeli metal band Orphaned Land

Iranian prog metal band Kahtmayan (instrumental)

my new favourite Swiss band Eluveitie (check out Thousandfold and Inis Mona)

Scottish Pirate metal band Alestorm

Finnish metal band Turisas (BATTLE METAL!)

Havn't listened to the first three yet, but Metal Hammer put in good reviews, and they have a fair few fans on the internets.

The last three are well known/from Europe but i just thought i'd include them anyway, they're a bit different but they're pretty good
