Dir En Grey - not exactly their biggest fan, but I would take a look around on youtube, Metal Hammer are big fans of them, and they have cult status and a MASSIVE following in Japan.
They're also pretty speratic in their music. They've got ballards, "deathcore" songs, Alt Metal songs, some weird genre i cant figure out, and what wikipedia says is prog metal, but its clearly some hardcore variant.

it hasn't been as bad as i thought.

Kinda annoying when i saw new Lamb of God and Mastodon stuff, and then searching for it on youtube, before realised i couldnt actually listen to it. which made me die a little inside.
